1973. “Manhole” solo record by Grace Slick. Recorded early in the year at Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco. I was downstairs co-producing “Insane Asylum” for Kathy McDonald when David Freiberg invited me upstairs to meet with Grace and Paul. I recorded a twelve bar blues piano improvisation and Grace and I wrote “Better Lying Down” on the spot. I also played bass on Epic No. 38″. It was the first time Paul, Grace and David asked me to join a new band they were getting together…Jefferson Starship. I had to go back to England to record my last Rod Stewart album, “Smiler”, but later returned to San Francisco to officially join Jefferson Starship in 1974. Grace and I would perform “Better Lying Down” during early Jefferson Starship tours…just the two of us on stage playing the blues.
